Nostalgia: Streets Bearing Traces of the Past — Seongsu (2022) 22 October 2022 | Seongsu-dong, Seoul Art Company Pieta A project on the shared memory a city loses when it changes too fast.

 

When I was in primary school, Seongsu-dong was a factory district. It was not a safe neighbourhood, so the school sent home notices marking the safe route to walk. Step off it and you passed men welding on the pavement, cigarettes in their mouths. I used to walk in the road instead, to avoid the sparks flying off in every direction like stars. Around the time I left high school, cafes moved into the factories and the neighbourhood became famous. Apartment towers over fifty storeys and knowledge-industry centres filled it in, and sunlight stopped reaching our flat. The stationery shop and the snack bar I passed on the way to school had become cafes selling the neighbourhood's vintage character. Some friends grew rich. Others moved again and again as their homes turned into commercial property. Perhaps ten years had passed. Walking through Seongsu one ordinary day, it struck me that we do not love what is dying. Our attention had moved to complicated numbers, not to the snack bar, the stationery shop, the secret hideout that had gone. But the traces of a childhood that had disappeared were still there, as an emptiness in me.

내가 초등학교 때 성수동은 공장지대였다.
치안이 좋은 동네는 아니었기에 초등학교에서는 가정통신문으로 안전한 등굣길을 알려주었고 그 길을 벗어나면 담배연기를 뱉으며 도보에서 용접 작업을 하는 아저씨들을 지나쳐가야 했다. 그렇게 나는 사방으로 튀는 별 모양의 용접 불꽃을 피해 차도를 통해 등교를 하곤 했다.

고등학교를 졸업할 무렵 공장의 자리에 카페가 들어오며 동네가 유명해졌다.

50층이 넘는 최고급 아파트들과 지식산업센터가 동네를 채우게 되면서 집 안에서 햇빛을 볼 수 없게 되었고 등굣길에 보던 친숙한 문방구와 분식집들은
동네 특유의 빈티지 감성을 뽐내는 카페로 변해있었다.
성수동의 변화로 부자가 된 친구들도 있는 반면 사는 집이 상업시설로 바뀌며
어쩔 수 없이 잦은 이사를 하게 되는 친구들도 생겨났다.
10년 남짓의 시간이 흘렀을까.
어느 때와 다름없이 성수동을 거닐다 문득 우리는 죽어가는 것을 사랑하지 않는다고 느꼈다.  어느새 우리의 관심사는 사라져버린 동네 분식집, 문방구, 비밀 아지트가 아닌 복잡한 숫자였다. 하지만 사라진 어린 시절의 흔적은 여전히 내 마음 속 허전함으로 남아있었다.
